Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, the festival falls on June 14th. The festival has a history of over 2,000 years and is one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays in China.

Origin

The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the death of the famous Chinese poet and minister Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period of ancient China. Qu Yuan was a loyal and patriotic official who was devoted to the state of Chu. However, he was slandered by corrupt officials and exiled by the king. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry expressing his love for his country and his people.

When the Chu state was conquered by the Qin state, Qu Yuan was devastated and drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 278 BC. The local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him or at least retrieve his body. They also threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body. These actions are said to be the origins of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) on this day.

Traditions

One of the most popular traditions associated with the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat races. Teams of rowers race against each other in colorful dragon-shaped boats, accompanied by the beating of drums and the cheering of spectators. These races are not only a way to honor Qu Yuan but also a way to pray for a good harvest and ward off disease.

Another tradition is the eating of zongzi, which are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice and filled with a variety of fillings such as pork, mushrooms, and red bean paste. The act of eating zongzi is a way to remember the rice dumplings thrown into the river to prevent the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body, and also to protect oneself from evil spirits.

In addition to dragon boat races and eating zongzi, people also hang up bunches of Artemisia and calamus leaves, and garlands made of Chinese mugwort, on their doors to ward off evil spirits.

Celebrations

During the Dragon Boat Festival, families and friends gather together to eat zongzi, watch dragon boat races, and participate in various cultural activities. The festival is also a time for people to pay respects to their ancestors and visit their graves. In some regions of China, people also participate in the custom of wearing a perfume pouch, which is a small bag containing fragrant herbs, designed to protect the wearer from evil spirits and diseases.

Many other countries with Chinese communities also celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. In addition to dragon boat races and eating zongzi, there are often other cultural and entertainment activities, making the festival a joyful and colorful celebration for people around the world.
